Copper Dome on The Old Bailey
Under the Lady of Justice
In conjunction with other craftsmen we carried out restoration work on the roof of The Old Bailey. This required replacement of the copper dome and also the leadwork underneath the Lady of Justice and at the bottom of the dome. The restoration was challenging because the dome itself is quite ornate and the leadwork involved a large amount of detail around the bottom of the Lady herself.
The work was carried out in bright copper and left to age to match the original and the copper stripped from the roof was 100% recycled. We noted when stripping the original copper from the dome that, on the side of the dome which faces St. Paul’s Cathedral, there were many small shrapnel piercings and damage created during World War II.
